This item of tack is an accessory that is comprised of three parts. There is a section of leather that runs from the central ring that rests at the base of the neck, or the front of the chest. It has an adjustable loop of leather that goes between the front legs of the horse and the girth is threaded through it to secure it in place.
Breastplates look great, but they also keep the saddle from sliding back. This can be a concern for low-withered horses and other horses where the saddle position is not as strong as it could be. The second part is the part that goes around the neck, and attaches to the dee rings on the front of the saddle. From the central ring in front, the optional running martingale attachment is buckled. Running martingales are used by intermediate to advanced riders to assist in keeping a horse’s head in good place for jumping.
When properly adjusted, the rings apply pressure downward on the reins only when the horse lifts his head and hollows his back.
